Hello Tim. I'm just wondering, when you trained with Hsu Hong Ji was he still using the belt ranking system which he used in the 60s, and if so what was the curriculum for each belt rank (which form, etc were taught for each level)? Thanks. T.

T.L.,
Yes, he was still using the belt ranking. I can't remember the curriculum for each belt exactly. I remember the student had to know all the eight step forms for the first test (Ba Bu Da, Ba Lian Shou, Ba Shou...) and black belt was all the forms in the system.

Tim,

I am currently working on the 5 8-step forms and have been doing so for the past 6 months. We spend a month on each before moving onto the next and just cycle through them in order.

We are currently working on Ba So and while I find this to be a very interesting set I am having some problems with it. I have brought these issues up in class a few times and gotten sufficient answers but was wondering what your take on them was.

1)As it has been explained to me so far, the main purpose of ba so is to connect the movement of the foot with the hand and that the body from hand to foot should move as one.

My problem stems from experiencing the bind in the lower portion of my leg below the knee. My instructors make it explicit that we should not overly shift the foot so far as to torque the knee which I have been trying to make sure I do not do. It still seems as if after practice though, that my knee gets "warm" and the feeling in uncomfortable (Maybe I am still slightly torqueing it?). There is no pain and I am not sure if you can call it discomfort but it is not exactly comfortable either.

My instructors have just suggested not turning the foot as far, which does help but seems not as powerful or correct. The are of the firm belief that everything will come with time (And I agree, but the knee issue bugs me).

I have never been diagnosed with knee problems but was wondering if you have come across anyone who experienced something similar.

2) I also just don't comprehend how to effectively pull off the ba so movement, but I am pretty sure this is a "I need to put more time and effort into it" issue rather than poor form ect ect. I was wondering if you had any tips on performing the mechanics of this move to help a newbie out?

Thanks,
Charles

hopefully this makes some sense...

Which "Ba So movement" are you referring to? There are 8 different sequences there.

So, Tim (sorry to keep at you about this) how many belt ranks were there and what color scheme did master Hsu use (was it the standard white, green, brown, black that was originally used by Karateka)? Also, can you remember an approximation of the material contained at each level? I'm just trying to get an overall idea of the levels as taught by master Hsu. I'm a member of NATSTA under Dr. Black and we don't use belt ranks, we just have 4 levels to learn the whole system. Thanks alot. T.

T.L.
Right, when I was in Taiwan, the belts were white, green, brown and black. I can't remember offhand which forms went with which belts.
