New to xingyi question

Tim's Discussion Board: Xing Yi Quan: New to xingyi question
By Vic Vanesse on Thursday, November 07, 2013 - 07:00 pm: Edit Post

The question that I am curious about is: Is Sun style xingyi 5 elements the same as others or is there such a thing as the different styles in performing the 5 elements for example? I am wanting to study some xingyi and if possible I would like to study Sun if it is in fact something that is available (Deng fumeng has a DVD it appers that is Sun) Of course if the basics would be the same then would be able to at least find something more accessible. Thanks Vic

Hi Vic,

Sun style is different to most other styles in that it dosen't have a follow step in the five elements and the water and cross cutting fists tend to be more compact.Other than that it is almost the same as other Xingyi styles.

Personally I would avoid the Deng Fuming series due to the translation being appalling and likely to lead to confusion. One of our guys has trained with him in China and says he is really good but if you don't know what he is actually saying its not much use.Its a case of monkey see and monkey might copy incorrectly.

Tim has produced an excellent manual on Xingyi Neigong and Mike Patterson has also produced a good book and has some useful DVDs.Its far better to stick to someone who speaks your language and is very competent in the art rather than trying to learn off a DVD that has been translated by someone who has probably never practiced Xingyi in their life.

Thanks Tony, I will take a look at the manual and Patterson book, etc. I really appreciate your response and input..... I remember that taiji dvd Deng put out and how he performed the Sun 97 with apps and even though I was just beginning to learn I was not pleased with what he was showing on it so I can only imagine what the "instruction" would be like for me trying to learn xingyi. Thanks again. Vic
