Tim's Discussion Board: Xing Yi Quan: XY in New York City: Archive through April 15, 2006

Hey Everyone,

I'm new to the discussion board but have read though several threads; lots of interesting and insightful views. I've been studying Hebei XY for about a year and am moving to NYC in about a month... does anyone know of (or have trained at)any reputable XY schools in the city (preferably Manhattan; I know of Li Tai Liang's school in Queens)? Any help would be much appreciated.

Wang Rengang is in NYC teaching Dachengquan, Xingyi and Bagua. I think he teaches a really nice Shanxi Xingyi. Check out his website. I think he teaches at a couple parks and does regular workshops.

Thanks for the input, guys. I started studying with Frank Allen a little over a month ago; so far I'm very pleased.

I have met and trained with Wang several times, and he is indeed a nice and wonderful man who has some good skills. I would hesitate to send you their for Xing Yi though. I have heard from several reliable sources that he basically took a few lessons from Li Tai Liang, and then basically took off and started teaching his understanding of the Xing Yi. Apparently there is some bad blood their for one reason or another.
I would go to the source, Li Tai Liang or one of his students. Never met any of them, but damn Li is pretty powerful. My Mantis teacher Hu Xi Lin knew him back in China, and has mad respect for him and his skills!
Just my 2 cents worth.

Jake, Doesn't jibe with the impressions I have of him. I plan on doing his Dachenchuan. That's my next step. I'll see what I can learn about what you've said.

AJ, Frank is great! I studied with him for a while and I learned a lot. He knows the nuts and bolts of the internal arts and can explain it very well.

As I understand it his Dacheng teachers were well versed hsing i players, and he has had other hsing i teachers as well. I think his elements have a different flavor from what I have seen.

His DCQ is excellent, but not sure of his XY skills. Like I said super nice guy, but something weird their with the XY and Li Tai Liang. Many of Li's students are VERY unhappy with him. Perhaps it is just internal political BS. Not sure. I hope I am wrong.
I have not heard of him training with anyone else in XY though.

I spoke with Wang the other day and this is what he had to say...
He learned most of his Xing Yi privately with Li Tailiang, so he has no idea how anyone could form an opinion regarding his skills, and says their is no bad blood between him and Li Laoshi.
I apologize if I stirred any waters, I was just sharing what I had heard. No one other than the given parties really know the truth. As always I suggest anyone check out a prospective teacher before joinging a group.

Thanks
Jake

Jake,
As a disciple of Grandmaster Li Tai-Liang, I would like to know who are the "many students who are unhappy" with Wang Rengang. I have asked around and no one has communicated with you. Either give the names or we will assume that you have made up this story in order to make yourself look important by sullying the name of my teacher. I will also inform Wang Rengang of these posts you are making about him and he or his disciples can deal with you as they see fit. If you fail to clear your name, be warned that my teacher will contact your teacher in the near future. Any more mistatements against my master or kungfu brothers will be seen as a challenge to our family.

Qitong,

What are a disciples duties? I've been thinking about getting a few.

well, apparently it involves threats over the internet, and a humurous "my people will call your people" language.

Hello Bob #2,
A disciple is a kungfu son of the master. This is a solemn promise to humble yourself to deeply learn the teachings and to respect the master as a father.
It also means to protect your father and kung fu family from all attacks or other harm.
Some people think they can hide behind a computer screen and attack masters with impunity.
Yours in martial brotherhood,
Qitong

Hello Mr. Jason,
This is my first time posting to English language martial forum.
If my stance is strong it is because of my love and respect to my master.
Mr. Burroughs is free to post anything he likes on any forum he wishes. However, when he posts things that harm my teacher, my kungfu brothers, or my system then he has to answer for that.
Kungfu may just be a hobby to you Mr. Jason, but to us it is a way of life.
Yours in martial brotherhood,
Qitong

i take all kinds of martial arts and training seriously. Very seriously. So seriously I don't have that much time to waste chasing down people who insult someone i know. Sticks and stones, or some such. If I had a nickel for every time some jackass tried to insult me on this forum, well, i'd have at least half a buck i think.
