5 form linked, to wrap or split?

Tim's Discussion Board: Xing Yi Quan: 5 form linked, to wrap or split?

Over the years I have learned a couple of different versions of the basic Hebei xingyi 5 Forms linked set. Most of them are the same except for what I call "the cannon fist to wild cat up the tree part". For my own practice I am trying to settle on a "Brian Version" that will be the way I am going to do it. Towards that end I am asking around to see what others do.

All the versions I have seen agree with the white crane flashes its wings (although exactly how they do that move varies a bit), then you got the cannon punch (right arm near head, left doing the punching) then things get a bit mixed until the leopard wild cat climbs the tree.

Some versions in the mixed up part do
Right elbow rolls in (down from where it was near your head)
Then left hand splits over the top of the right
Pull both hands back to your gut
Drill out the left then drill out the right
Then you are all set to do wild cat up the tree.

The alternative (and I have seen a couple of variations of this alternative) is often called the wrapping posture (baoguo shi) approach.
I find it somewhat hard to describe but the general drift is that you end up doing what I would call an alligator (water lizard) to the right, then to the left
Ending up with your left foot forward, with the right hand forward
Then you are all set to do wild cat up the tree.

Any thoughts on which to do?
I realize the answer to that may well be, they do different things, both are commonly seen, do what you like; but still I would be interested to hear what others say.

Take care,
Brian

I was tought to execute Pi Chuan after Pao Chuan, then to draw back for a right-handed Heng Chuan, followed by Wildcat Washes its Face (variation of Heng). After that, we do reverse Tsuann Chuan, and finally Wildcat Climbs the Tree.
