Dan Tian and Xing Yi Quan

Tim's Discussion Board: Xing Yi Quan: Dan Tian and Xing Yi Quan
By Robert Houoghton on Wednesday, July 31, 2002 - 02:26 pm: Edit Post

I am new to the discussion group and would like to hear peoples opinion on the role played by Dan Tian rotation in Xinig Yi Quan. My studies in XYQ have been with Master Shang Ji in China and Master Victor Fu in Vancouver, although learning much from both of these masters nether spent time explaining the role of the Dan Tian in the execution of the Five Phases.

My primary question, what is the general role of the Dan Tian in the art as a whole.
Second, what are the rotational directions for each of the Phases?

If anyone is able to help me with these questions please comment.

Robert

I didn't notice this post before, if you're still around, here's a couple of quotes, which may explain the reluctance, from sources alot of the contributors to this board should be familiar with.

'The people of the world do not know what the internal power of Xing Yi Quan is. They try to guess from looking at the form, or suppose that we use much effort from the heart, OR SUPPOSE IT IS SOME MOVEMENT IN THE BELLY, these types of things have no effect, this is taking false for the true.' Xing Yi Transmissions

'People always think about the concrete body and related phases and that internal strength is deemed as an endeavour of the mind, or arousing qi in the abdomen, etc; so they do not know what is the internal strength in Xing Yi boxing. All these are superficial and false understanding. That is why there are so many martial artists but so rarely are there real successful ones.' Sun Fu Quan

Both quotes suggest that the understanding you seek is of little or no practical value.
