A personal question to Tim

Tim's Discussion Board: Xing Yi Quan: A personal question to Tim

Hey, tim, I get alot of criticism from both MMA fighters and TMA practitioners. I mainly practice XingYiQuan, but I heavily cross train by attending seminars, sparring with other stylists and reseraching other styles like Krav Maga, Silat, Bjj, greco-roman wrestling, and anything I can get my hands on!@

The MMA guys I work with give me heat about practicing kung fu. Saying its all flash and has no use, and when I use it in sparring, even when it works, they say, "Kung fu is just all trickery"

And when I train in TMA practitioners, they say that cross-training and what not is counter productive becuase you cannot focus on one style. I disagree! I think you must focus on one or two things, but remain open to fill in gaps.

When I spar with other Xing Yi players, and I take them down, they say, "Thats not xing yi!". When In fact all im doing is being innovative and using the postures from Xing Yi but in a grappling aspect.

As an MMA coach and bjj competitor, do u ever get fleck from the MMA community because you also practice kung fu?

and vice versa?

Who cares if anyone says your kung fu is trickery, as long as it works.

Every single "Traditional" martial art in existence was founded by someone who cross trained in several styles then created a synthesis of his own. Since the very style they practice was the result of cross training, I always find it amusing when "Traditional" martial artists claim that cross training is somehow counter-productive. What they are really saying is they are intimidated by people who are more well rounded fighters than themselves.

Thanks Tim, I wonder when people will realize that no one art has everything a human being needs, and an art is only as useful as the user.

if people could realize those two things, MA would evolve light-years

would I noticed in my grappling training, is that internal arts really helps me in my fluidty and sensing abilities.....like you said, "who cares"

Here is a better question. Is it worth learning more than one trick per pony? Meaning yea I agree we should all learn about ground, weapons, standup, multiple opponents, mentlaity of shock, kicks/punches/takedowns/defenses of all etc. but what Im trying to get at is: is it worth learning 3 different ways to do a takedown or three different ways once you have your opponents back say standing after ducking under a punch or turning ihm from the clinch to throw him on his back or should you just learn one way to not confuse yourself in such situation and have too many options in your arsenal to choose from? FOr example from the back position I can rear nakid choke, I can dump you on your hea din a suplex but I dont think I could turn you behind to a rear nakid after just get mount or side control (But I havent practiced this much as its hard in sparring or controlled settings to find willing participants), I can sweep you while holding your head and arm, I can dump you sideways, etc. but I kind of regret knowing all these options now cause it would take me like 2 seconds to decide on one when I think of it in my head and I always cant decide what Id do in all these what if situations that go in my mind daily cause I have too many options. But Im kind of crazy about fighting and ma cause most people dont go about their entire day thinking about what theyd do or fighting do they?

What's weird is how when I feel I mastered a technique I find others in my head out of that one or finishes from it that I want to try or experiment with. But unless I pplay around with it I wouldn't feel comfortable with it and it would drive me nuts and make me obsessed to utilize it in sparring.
