Good for you for stepping up brother. But with whom are you training MMA that you have never seen a crucifix before??

Cheers
JAB

Very impressive, Kelly!!

I double applaud you. 1) For stepping, as Jake shared...for so many talk about it, but do nothing to back it up. 2) for the great awareness to capture the triangle in the mist of strikes. Applying submissions from the bottom while being punched is something that even some high level submission guys cannot do. You almost got it. Next time you will, just keep sparring G&P defensively from the bottom!

Yes, the crucifix is a common technique, but it's also outside of box of traditional BJJ. If your school doesn't allow neckcranks, it's highly possible you'll never see it.

That's my major disagreement with schools that do not allow leglocks and neckcranks who wish to compete. There is so much out there that you'll never learn to defend. I've even used that "Pancake" (double underhook takedown) in Judo competitions. I just let go of the head when we fell to the mat.

You are a winner. Don't let anyone tell you different.

I train "mma" at master lus health center where I study hsing yi, Tai chi, and Ba gua. For these mma tourneys i am trying to get as much experience with as many good grapplers as I can, however I definitely wish/need to get more. Im going again on the thrid of december. Learning more each time. I was really happy with my conditioning, and my ability to sprawl on his takedown. I feel I need to work on my explosiveness and tentativeness at the start. I should have just brought the fight to him.
I have actually seen the crucifix before, but it used the legs to do it. Anyway, im doin tons of plyos, and im working my hands even more to try and raise my spirit.

I also commend you for getting in there!

But i have to be a drag and point out a few things.

You did not sprawl!

The guys shoot was SLOPPY! You couldve capitalized on that... He puts his hands up and closes his eyes as he shoots. lol.

But good job man. Keep fighting like that and you will learn. But get your ass to a real grappling school! You will not learn that much just from grappling with grapplers. You have to learn the art bro..

You shouldve just closed the distance and started using your xing yi. Use what you have, and stay in your comfort zone. you dont wanna play a wrestlers game on the ground.

Well I try to train to be able to affect the situation nomatter what the range is. I hope to be able to use more striking in my next one. I'm still new to this sport so it will take me some time to feel comfortable.

Well done Kelly for putting your ass on the line and testing your art, and for doing what all the mouth boxers out there don't.

By Kelly Crofts-Johnson on Wednesday, November 03, 2010 - 11:18 pm: Edit Post

Well I don't really see it as a test of my art. I feel its obvious that my training has affected my performance. All I'm doing is going to the lab. Each time I'm learning. Im smarter now than i was before it.

I was talking about your personal art aided by all your training, not a particular "style".

Word. I am really getting into some plyo training and I think it will really help with my takedown defense. He burst at me, and I saw it coming, but i wasn't able to use my footwork quickly enough to neutralize it, so I figure if I work my explosive footwork, it will help me on reaction time.
I need more sparring partners.

By robert on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 - 03:47 am: Edit Post

Plyo training isnt going to do anything for your sprawling speed. If you want to work on your sprawling speed, you have to practice sprawling. against single, and double shots.(takedowns)

I suggest you look on you tube for a tutorial on sprawling and practicing the sprawl "live" speed with a partner. Its not that hard to practice.

Good luck.

Good advice

By Kelly Crofts-Johnson on Friday, November 12, 2010 - 03:30 pm: Edit Post

Actually, I disagree. Plyo training will allow me to burst from whatever stance i am in, into another one much quicker than without it. That is the entire point of plyo training. I have already noticed a difference. Read up on it ;)

On a side note, I am drilling a lot more takedown defense right now for my upcoming fight on the third. I am drilling getting my underhooks in as well as evasive footwork.

Trying to get some spirit training in there also to increase my confidence.
