Tim's Discussion Board: Martial Arts - Miscellaneous: ARTICLE ON JING WU ACADEMY

There is an outstanding article on the Jing Wu Association in the latest edition of "Classical Fighting Arts" magazine by Brian Kennedy and Elizabeth Guo.

Fans of Bruce Lee's "Fists of Fury" or Jet Li's "Fearless" will be interested to see what the real place looked like and what was actually taught.

Jing Wu vid where they're having a bit of craic. Still it's nice to see an old guy still as hard as a coffin nail. Love the tagline on this one.

Happy New Year to everyone,
Tim, thanks much for the mention of the Jing Wu article. Elizabeth and I appreciate that. And yeah, the Jing Wu was an interesting place. We were lucky to find that Anniversary Book that they put out in 1929. It is loaded with great photos, like the one you mentioned. It is interesting and kind of amusing to see the range of activities they were involved in; weight lifting, gymnastics, basketball, english conversation classes and hunting.(there are a couple of photos of the Jing Wu crew out with their over under shotguns taking ducks and pheasant).

It was interesting too to see how the Jing Wu fit in with the modernization of Chinese martial arts and how they were aiming to put Chinese martial arts on a modern western sports science footing. They were the first solid step towards that. The progression was: the Jing Wu program leading to the National Guo Shu program, then that leading into the Communist Chinese Wu Shu programs.

In any event, thanks much. Happy Holidays to you and all the Shen Wu crew.
Take care,
Brian
