do you have any personal experience with sambo?
any thoughts or experiences? how do you compare sambo to say, judo, jui jitsu, etc? also, your thoughts on how ba gua or other "in close" fighting systems without ground fighting would fare against grappling based systems above. lastly, in general there exists an opinion among some standup striking based arts they just will not clinch or grapple, and basically say they would not "allow" themselves to be taken to the ground. you have experience with bjj as well as the internal styles, so please expound on your experience. why don't we see more standup based systems in mma events other than kickboxers, muy thai, etc. why no kung fu fighters? thanks for your time tim.

I have studied Sambo formally only in seminars (three of them to date). Sport Sambo (as opposed to military Sambo, which I have no experience of) is basically a combination of Judo and wrestling. I believe it is an excellent combat sport. Many practitioners of BJJ will study some of the leg locking technques in which Sambo fighters generally excel. Sambo players also have some unique methods of using the uniform for takedowns.

People that say they will never have to clinch and grapple should watch any mixed martial arts event (or better yet, spar full-contact with a competent, cross-trained fighter)and then decide whether grappling is important to practice or not.

I think there are not more Kung Fu fighters in MMA events because most styles of Kung Fu don't emphasize more realistic, full-contact training methods, and students are not encouraged to cross train.
