I'm thinking of plunking down the $$$ for three videos by Mike Sigman on internal strength. Has anyone worked with Mr. Sigman or benefited from his videos?

Been to one of Sigman's seminars, seen his videos. The man has excellent skills and a great approach to conveying the basics of his mechanics. Well worth picking up.

I agree.
Although it may not agree with what is espouced on this board; the whole pengjin thing being really the basis of internal arts and not just softness. I have a few different views than Mike but he's on the mark for the most part. Strong SOB too.

Buddy (Tripp, of Plymouth MA, student of Luo Dexiu, Pak Vic DeThouars, and Kumar Frantzis, some time internal teacher, part time bartender, and full time father and husband, for those who are keeping track)

I have seen one of his videos on peng. They are ok but he could have used words better to convey his messages.

Don't do it. That's why I don't advertise them very much... if you haven't had someone show you how relaxed and solid the basic jin is, etc., you can't really get it from a video. The videos are as close as I can get to an amateurish "how to", given the medium and my level of skills and the difficulty of conveying ideas from the qi-paradigm to the western-kinesiology paradigm. It's better to meet with someone who has a real handle on jin skills first and *then* buy a tape. One tape, not 3.

I'll be doing a workshop in Orange County on July 27-28, if anyone is interested in learning a sequential approach to silk-reeling exercises, from basic jin to the complexities of dantien usage, winding, fascia.

Regards,

Mike

Hey Mike,

Can you recommend other people in addition to yourself?

Bob

Thanks for the honest answer, Mike!

Depends on where you are. There are more and more people who are focusing on jin skills, but a lot of this is just getting started in the West, so you don't have large numbers of people who are skilled to any great degree. Most of the people whom I meet that claim to be doing neijia family are just doing conditioned external mechanics, so it can get pretty confusing. Once you begin to understand jin mechanics (mind led the jin path) and the obvious necessity of how real jin *must* be controlled by a powerful and mobile dantien, then it's pretty easy to spot who's over the threshold of jin skills. But if you can't spot that yet, then just be careful and keep an open mind about whomever you meet.

Regards,

Mike

Thanks Mike,

But can you recommend other people in addition to yourself?

Hi guys, does any one know of a school which will teach Shan xi Xing-i??
I'm dreading that my school is the only one left in the world.I'm leaving for Singapore Hong Kong and then to Canada for a bout five years. Oh yeah, I currently live in Australia.

Sure. Like I said above, it depends on where you are, whom I would recommend. There are a number of people I can recommend, but not everywhere... as I explained above. It also depends on what you're looking for. Based on what you're looking for I would probably recommend various people for various focused interests.

Where do you live, what do you study, and what are you interested in? I can give you my recommendations, for whatever they're worth, based on that information.

Well I'll be in Canada for about 5 years so I guess Canada...
I’m 23 and I've been studying full body Wing Chun for about 4 years, 5 to six days per week.
This, along side my Shanxi Hsing-i is the perfect combination for me. Full body Wing Chun (round body)is said to be the grand son of Hsing-i. The combination has given me a greater understanding of both which in the whole scheme of things is still nothing!!
I study privately under Si-Gung Rodger Smart and apparently anyone who's anyone in China and Hong Kong’s Wing Chun circles claim Si-gung is the best they've seen (he took out Fat Shans best with the greatest of ease). Not that Hong Kong is a benchmark for anything.
Si-Gung is the soul student of Si-Jo Chu, a renowned Chinese herbalist. It all started with Si-Jo Chu's Grandfather, a well-known doctor of shanxi. To cut a very long story short the Chu's had the best in medicine; the Song's had the best in Hsing-i. Both being Taoist, Song Shi Rong and Dr Chu agreed in a full trade off of information. Si-Jo's Grandfather, with his newfound combination was undefeated in the whole of china in challenges, this ultra combination was filtered directly into Si jo.

Si Jo Chu is the most amazing specimen I have ever seen!! He is apparently is in his later Sixties and is up and down like my 10-year-old nephew, hard as a rock and skin like a twelve year old!!! You will never see ant thing like it. Probably one of the only true masters left on the planet, and you'd never know it, besides his stocky muscular build. He teaches no one but Si Gung in his back yard and has done for the last 12 years.
This is now being fed to me in very small doses, my power and body transformation has baffled me,
But I am soon to leave because I married a Canadian... Everything I have laid eyes on out side my school has been an embarrassment to watch I even accepted challenges, which is completely out of character for me, in the hope of being humbled. I’m yet to ask Si-Gung my intentions and have not build up the courage to ask him yet.
Does anyone know of a Shanxi School??????

I think most folks can learn a little from just about anyone.

If you attend "Walter's " workshop you will learn a LOT,in a very short amount of time.

Open the mind, widen the eyes, and clean out the ears.Do put 'the ol ego' in the back pocket as well.

Not unless your last name is Sigman.

Probably would not be a bad idea for Walter to do a "Walter" workshop at some point.

CHL apparently knows that my real name is Walter, Walter.

Walter W. (Mike) Sigman, Jr.

For the record, (this means you Shane, as I feel you owe me an apology) while Mike's name may be Walter, Walter is the ONLY name I post under. After 46 years, I take responsibility for my actions, and generally speaking don't hide (we won't discuss whether I'd hide if a .45 were involved, held in the recently bloodied hands of a bag pounder who shall remain nameless), even on the net.
Good training,
Walter
(for any interested, this is posted in the spirit of not taking oneself toooooooooo seriously :->;)

I apologize to you Walter T Joyce Sr.

And I think you should be ashamed of yourself
for waiting till age 46 to take responsibility for your actions. (not meant toooooo seriously)

By the way did anyone attend the Sigman workshop?

And a personal favorite from 'Sigman'and the NL.Really captures "IT"

"At one point Chen XiaoWang offered his hand/arm to me and invited me to put a Qinna on him.I immediately applied the core shaotran formation, I controlled his fingers (of his right hand)by squeezing them in my right hand, and I controlled his wrist and forearm with my left hand and my left forearm.I applied power to see what he would do.Chen XiaoWang allowed the "connection"from his hand to shoulder to back to handle most of my torque(his power is greater than mine in this respect, quite a bit greater). At the same time,he directed peng to his forearm to counter the pressure from my forearm..... beautiful! All the while he was relaxed. As he did this,he said,"Block from inside, not outside."

Jeff, Where are you in Indiana? I live in NW Indiana and practice Shuai Chiao. I'm always looking for a training partner. In addition, I may be able to get you in touch with a very solid Long Fist teacher in Naperville IL who has worked with Mike Sigman.

Larry - I live in Ft. Wayne and practice judo. I would be interested in your views of shuai chiao vs. judo and if you try to implement the principles deleniated in Tim's combat throws book in your practice. Thanks for the message!

Jeff

Jeff, I stay all the way across the state from you in Hammond. That sucks, I LOVE Judo guys. They're the only other people I know crazy enough to enjoy getting tossed on their heads, LOL.

Shuai Chiao vs. Judo? I think they're really a lot more similar than different. The best way I could describe it would be: think about what BJJ did with Judo's ground game. Now imagine if someone did the same thing with Judo's stand up game.

As far as Tim's book, I have it and I like it a lot. There are some good ideas. But my school focuses on different things, so we don't look at throws exactly the same.
