Anyone familiar with Sifu Richard Tsim in Long Beach, CA? Any feedback regarding skill level, teaching ability, etc would be appreciated. I am considering studying with him and am curious about others impressions of him. My initial impression is very positive. Thanks.

Why don't you just make the 15 minute drive to Garden Grove and study with Tim? I do.

This is an option I am considering. I work as a consultant and end up traveling all over the city. Getting to any night class consistently is a challenge. From a logistics standpoint, Tsim's school is extemely close. He offers early morning classes in arts I am interested in learning - Bagua, Wing Chun & Tai Chi Chuan. Grappling seems to be the only missing area. His background seems pretty good but I have not seem him or his students in action. His school is not open to the public, you must be interviewed first before being accepted as a student.

Does Tim offer any early morning classes? What is his teaching style? Are slackers allowed to slack i.e. how is quality control maintained? Thanks.

Hi Chuck,
I don't have any morning group classes, only private lessons. The group classes are all at night. You are welcome to come by and watch or try a class anytime you like.

RE: Shen Wu and Tim

No early morning classes. Teaching style is relaxed, enthusiastic and student centered. He teaches every class from beginning to end, gives excellent instructions, and really cares that students learn the material.

Slackers? This is not bootcamp and there are no rigid rules. Everyone is treated as an adult and are expected to be responsible for their own behavior.

Tim/Meynard - thanks for your replies. Which class & day best to observe? My interest is really in fundamentals and learning basic skills well. Seeing different levels of experience in action would also be beneficial to see how folks progress. Thanks.

My class schedule is on the Shen Wu website. Friday is a good day to come, I have a Xing Yi Quan class at 6pm, and a Shen Wu combined class following at 7:30. If you have more time on the weekends, I have a Ba Gua Zhang class on Saturdays from noon until 1:30.

Chuck,

You really would not find a better teacher than Tim. Good luck. I hope you make the right decision.

Chuck,
One of my students studied with Richard Tsim for several years and was one of his assistant instructors, he said you can give him a call if you are interested. If you would like his number, e mail me at shenwu1@peoplepc.com and I'll give you his phone number.
