Tim's Discussion Board: Martial Artist - Miscellaneous: Rickson Gracie: Archive through September 08, 2002

Tim,
Great interview. I have to admit you are changing my opinion of BJJ and the Gracies. (Not that it matters to the Gracies what I think ;->;). It was the macho posturing that bugged me, it does no matter who is doing it. It seems I should have looked a little deeper before dismissing the art and the Gracies. My loss.

You're finally catching on Walter... :-) Soon enough you'd be grappling too.

Meynard,
And what lead you to believe that I've never done grappling? Ground fighting is another ball of wax, I'll admit that. Never assume, it makes an ass out of u and me.

Dude, I was talking about groundfighting. Don't be a freakin contrarian just to be smart. You know what I meant. You make me wanna smack the •••• out of you. :-)

Dude, if you want me to know what you're talking about, then state your ideas clearly. I'm not a contrarian, and I refuse to apologize for being smart. I can't help what you want to do, only stop you when you try. ;->

No one manly enough to grapple (women included) would ever use a panzie phrase like:
assume makes an ass of 'u' and 'me'

Sip your latte' and enjoy retirement.

By Walter T. Joyce Sr. on Friday, September 06, 2002 - 12:33 pm: Edit Post

I don't sip latte, I'm not retired, and I believe the word is pansie.
"It was the macho posturing that bugged me, it does not matter who is doing it."
It doesn't bug me that much. Consider the source I always say.

How good of a lawyer are you? You were talking about how your opinion of the Gracie and BJJ is changing. It's safe to follow that when someone else says "soon enough you'll be grappling", means that they're talking about BJJ ground fighting. Were we talking about any other kind of grappling? I think not. :-)

Is one step from a banana peel soon enough?

By Bob #2 on Friday, September 06, 2002 - 03:54 pm: Edit Post

There's a reason I'm not as familiar with the word 'pansie' as some folks are.

Let me guess, English is a foreign language to you? Or did you skip that page in "Increasing Your Word Power?"

Words are tools, much like you. :->
Have a nice weekend, boys.

By Meynard on Friday, September 06, 2002 - 04:35 pm: Edit Post

Actually the word is Pansy. It seems that both of you are not familiar with the word. Retards. :-)

Why I know this...uuummm there's a good excuse, damn it.

"words are tools, much like you." LOL Gramps!

Meynard is quite correct! "Pansy" is the singular spelling "ies" is used for plural as in you "pansies".

What does any of this crap have to do with Rickson Gracie? It almost seems disrespectful for these comments to be posted under a heading that contains his name. Anyway, here's a few more questions:

1) Is Rickson the highest ranked person in BJJ?
2) Does he teach Orlando Cani's method to the students at his academy?
3) Tim, have you ever 'rolled' with Rickson?

I forgot one. Can somebody explain the Gracie diet? I understand that it has to do with food combinations. I have read about something similar associated with the Taoists. Thanks.

Walter,

That first post was a very weakly disguised "traditional kung-fu couldn't beat grappling" type post.

It's been through this board quite often. It been in MA magazines since mixed martial arts, JKD and Ultimate fighting etc. had their big boom - like, 5 years ago and more.

We all have respect for all the styles.

Sorry that was to Man from Missouri.

By Tim on Sunday, September 08, 2002 - 01:40 am: Edit Post

1)It depends on who is giving rank. Helio Gracie (Rickson's father) is the highest ranked in their lineage.

2) I believe many of the exercises are included in the conditioning, but I don't think Rickson actually teaches separate classes in Cani's method.

3) I have never rolled with Rickson, but I definately plan on it.

Maciej,

I think you misunderstood my original post. When I asked Tim about Luo fighting Rickson, I had the "kung-fu vs. grappling" idea in mind. But, I only wrote about that story to explain my interest in Rickson Gracie, which is genuine.

I have come to believe that Rickson is the best fighter on the planet, and was interested in getting as much information about him as I could. I figured the other people on this discussion board would probably know quite a bit. I was right. I appreciate the insightful messages from 'the original Macacao fino' and Tim, of course.

I would like to hear more. What about the Gracie diet?

Steven

By Tim on Sunday, September 08, 2002 - 02:28 pm: Edit Post

The Gracie diet was developed by Carlos Gracie, Helio's older brother. It is based on food combining, which foods can be eaten together and which foods should be eaten at different times. There are some restrictions, no refined sugar products, no pork, no two starches at the same sitting... There are extensive lists of which foods can be combined, which foods should never be combined, which foods can be combined unless they are prepared with fat, some foods are neutral. The actual diet is somewhat complicated.
