Has anyone ever seen this guys video tapes, or used his exercise methods?

Would like to know your various thoughts, is he for real or a bunch of B.S.

I like his attitude. I like his emphasis on conditioning being the key to fighting. I enjoy his "in your face" style that he used to have in his email newsletters.

I have some concerns about a program that involves lots of full squats. I am not familiar with what the current thinking among exercise physiologist is, but at one point they were saying "no" to full squats in high reps.

I strongly disagree with Mr. Furry's dismissal of such concerns with the comment that "heh look baseball catchers do thousands of squats and it don't hurt their knees".

On the contrary, just the other day in the Taipei Times I saw a photo of the new knee supports (a kind of "v" block worn behind the knee) that the American major leaguers are considering using....to prevent long term knee damage.

My only bit of solid advice is to rely on scientific studies and/or what the pros do, before taking up an exercise program.

But I do admire the dude's style and have no doubt he could handle himself.

take care,
Brian

Matt Furey is a great guy! Fantastic marketing skills. Knows a lot of stuff. He doesn't compete anymore, but he won a Shuai Chiao tournament in China. He trains with Karl Gotch. I'm sure he knows a lot of ways to submit anyone.

Ron,
If you are interested in Matt's exercise methods, your best initial investment might be his "Combat Conditioning" book. It's a collection of basic calisthenic exercises and routines, all useful for strength and conditioning.

I've heard a lot of good things about Matt Furey's conditioning stuff.

For the record, I've never heard his name mentioned in any of the Shuai Chiao circles I'm familiar with. As far as I know, he's a Catch Wrestler.

Furey claims to have won a world shuai jiao championship.

He is pretty much a laughing stock on most MMA and BJJ boards because his marketing has gone WAY over the top, along with his prices. The fact that he looks like he is putting on the pounds but wears a shirt that says "Body by Furey" has gotten a lot of mileage as well.

I bought two of his vids which, for the content, were way overpriced. Essentially a video of his weight workout (at the gym, while actually explaining on the video that they can't get caught filming the video or they will get kicked out....) good for laughs the first time thru, on the second viewing you ask yourself "I paid how much for this?"

The second shows him putting his students through their paces. Not at all impressive, though it shows the cool exercises in his "Royal Court." The workout is hard and Furey is pretty much the only one who can do the stuff he is showing for the reps he is showing.

You are then treated to him preparing for a shuai jiao tournament, which on this video looks like very sloppy, badly done judo with no groundwork against people that have no business going against him.

I think he started out okay, but he seems to have gotten lost along the way. Check out some of the special training videos and the absolutely ridiculous prices he is charging for them on his website now (or in Grappling Magazine.)
