PUTTING OUT THE CANDLE

Tim's Discussion Board: Qi Gong / Power Training : PUTTING OUT THE CANDLE
By Curious (Unregistered Guest) on Friday, February 20, 2004 - 04:06 pm: Edit Post

Hi Tim,

I was curious about what kind of training method of putting out the candle. What does it mean if a person could put out the candle from far? And if you hit someone like that, what difference would there be from throwing an external punch? Would you please tell me what you know about this from your experience.

Thanx

Jumping in here. When the blow puts the candle out from a distance that means that candle had a treated wick which will go out all by itself and the punch was timed to coincide with that.

Extinguishing a flame from any significant distance is stage magic of some form or another, as far as I concerned,

However, extinguishing a burning candle wick by stopping or retracting your punch just short of the flame is a legitimate training method to increase speed and to learn to retract the fist as quickly as you extend it. Doing this properly will extinguish the flame by causing a sudden vacuum of air so the flame dies...

On the other hand, if you spent a lot of time just on this, you are liable to develop some speed -- which is always useful -- but not necessarily a better punch which depends on delivering mass in a way that is connected to stepping through the target properly as well as learning how making contact with something affects what you are doing.

Oh, and to paraphrase Bruce Lee... Don't spend a lot of time punching a flame until the flame learns to duck or parry as well as punch back!

Actually,
extinushing a flame from any significant distance represents the body being aligned, relaxed, focused, and even distribution of the breath, and leading of the body's energy. If one masters this skill, he will be able not to bruise muscle or break bone, but cause internal injury to his opponent my disturbing or even damaging the organs, which may lead to sickness or death in a given point in time. And this comes from a person who practices this technique and actually has some skill in doing so.

Humble,Just how far of a distance are you talking about?

By Humbleman (Unregistered Guest) on Wednesday, February 25, 2004 - 03:45 pm: Edit Post

Only 2 feet but its constant; however, I know it can be done from further distance. I was just surprised that some people think its magic?

I've got a hundred bucks that says you can't.

? what.......guys, it's not some trick, it is a actual training method on how verify that you are doing a internal strike correctly, what's the big deal. Monks at the Shaolin monastary practice this. Try first at a close distance, and just do endless practicing, but it can't be a strike as if you where externally punching a bag.(I find that Xing I strikes are the best put it out, particularly spliting, but it has to be a strike, not waving the hand to try and put out the candle). I'll demonstrate for free, just come let me know, I'm at California State Northidge.

Take care

How about you come hit a bag instead? Come to the Saturday afternoon open mat and we will spar. I want to feel this correct internal strike of yours. Or you can visit me at Cal State Los Angeles. We will do it in the gym. If you're not so inclined you can come to the next Shenwu Open tourney and fight NHB style.

Whatever...I'm game to see how this actually works.

Humble Man,

I work in Woodland Hills. I'd like to come by and see you put out a candle from no less than 2 feet away with a punch.

Send me an e-mail at Wuji_1@yahoo.com. We'll hook up in the next few weeks.

Shane

Humble Man,

I noticed you've been on the site- but haven't sent me an e-mail yet. The address may look weird- it's wuji_1 @yahoo.com

Great,
as long as there no competitiveness, or if you guys are going to try and jump me. Allow me to set up an e-mail first so that I can e-mail you. And I hope Meynard comes so that we can be friends instead of him trying to put the aggressive on me. You guys have to come to CSUN though cuz I live in the dorms, and I have not transportation.

See Ya!

Humbleman,

I'm probably the lest competitive human alive. And I've never felt the urge to 'jump' anybody so you don't have to worry about that. I'm just interested in seeing someone actually put out a candle from two feet away. (I'll be impressed if you can blow a candle out with your breath 2-feet away).

I'm going through car drama right now and as soon as that is resolved I'll be glad to come to your dorm. (you may be able to click on my name on this post and send me an e-mail directly. Just send me directions and your phone number and we'll hook up in a week or two).

If nothing else- go to Yahoo.com and set yourself up with a free e-mail account.

Later,
Shane

Extinguishing a candle's flame with a punch from several feet away is something for amateurs to piddle away their meaningless hours mastering.

The ability to LIGHT a candle at such a distance using the Mountain Dragon Stare technique is what separates the masters like me from miscreants like you.

Humble Man,

Still waiting to hear from you. I'm going to New York for business for a week or two- but would very much like to see your demonstration later this month (it's March now).

Thanks,
Shane

I've done the candle thing from about 1 1/2 feet away many times in the past. It is just technique, nothing magical. If you are loose enough you can learn how to do it in a short period of time.

By Bob #2 on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 01:30 am: Edit Post

a lot of beer and beans first?

By jmedurga (Unregistered Guest) on Saturday, March 20, 2004 - 09:40 am: Edit Post

No, I believe that would have the opposite effect on the flame.

The answer to your question: 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Yes, a lot of beer, beans, raw eggs and peanut butter. A highly combustible mix! WARNING: Do not wear flammable clothing!
