Yet another xing yi nei gong question, Tim

Tim's Discussion Board: Qi Gong / Power Training : Yet another xing yi nei gong question, Tim
By Timber on Wednesday, June 09, 2010 - 08:15 pm: Edit Post

When I first learned this set I was taught to do each movement super slow to learn to "feel" it in my body. After doing it for a while and reading here I finally understood that I was utilizing the core muslces of the body to move the limbs and to connect movements to the waste. The last time I went to a qi gong class I was told to go slower.

Here's my question. Now that I understand and feel this whole body connection I feel like I should be able to experiment with the speed. Does the speed matter? If I am doing this set for martial power purposes wouldn't doing movements with more power increase my power?

I see limits in doing the movements slow from a martial point of view. From a meditation and injury point of view slower is probably better.

Am I completely off, Tim?

Speed does matter. Some of the Nei Gong exercises are designed to be done slowly, other with more force.

The individual exercises should be done at their appropriate speeds for maximum benefit.

Hmmm. Thanks, Tim.

I think I know which ones are to be done with more force. Two examples would be slapping hands above and below and raise the back 7 tines. Are those correct? Can the moves that require more force be done really hard or just a little bit more force than the other excercises?

And to clarify I didn't mean super fast. The speed you're moving at in the YouTube DVD clips is the speed I was referring to.

Correct, it's not good to put too much force into the faster movements though. You should always remain as relaxed as possible.

Tim,
You've mentioned in the past that you liked the book naked warrior. Panel talks about tensing the muscles a lot while doing body weight exercises and this will increase strength faster. This goes against being relaxed when doing nei gong. Do you ascribe to this principle when doing body weight exercises? Does anyone follow Pavel's method?

Yes,

Do the movements FAST!

Last time i did "moving hands like clouds" really fast, i started to lift off of the ground due to sheer atmospheric resistance.

Next thing you know, i was moving my hands in the clouds. It was a very relaxing moment.

Someday timber, you will reach my level.
