My father was a policeman in a mining town for a few years and once told me that he only drew his revolver once in all those years but that he used the roll of dimes that he carried in his pocket every Friday night while breaking up fights in bars as the miners were paid on Friday afternoon.

Of course, those were different times in the late 1940s, the miners in Rouyn-Noranda didn't carry knives and automatic pistols to make their point over a spilled drink ...

Rumbre,

"You don't know the whole story, didn't ask, made an assumption, and acted out of element... THWACK! "

as they say in Veitnaam- "Aroyee???"

Are you saying your teacher didn't know the whole story and should have asked the guy: "are you drunk and leaning back against that car because you are unstable on your feet and maybe we should take up this little sqirmish later when you can more ably defend yourself, or are you leaning back against that car because seeing me in these terricolth shorts and tube top makes you want to spank me with an antennea?"

I don't get your story at all.

Dude I totally know how it is!
My buddies dad grew up in Japan after the war, and he was white. It was really hard for him. Other kids used to pic on him and beat him up all the time. He's got stories of how sometimes 3-4 kids would gang up on him and beat him up (not that one probably couldn't have done it!).

That was all Intel this one day when he was walking in the woods, he stumbled on a cave. Inside there was a little old man, he was the true 32nd grand master of Ogon shin yo ryu ninjutsu. The man took him in and trained him in his system. He trained him in the super arts of ninjutsu! He learned how to sneak around undetected, and how to shoot a bow and arrow, and use a sword! Then when my buddies dad when back to school, like normal the other kids started to pick on him, when he went to use his ninja skills her remembered that he hadn't brought a ninja sword, or a ninja bow, and was really in trouble! The other kids killed him that day.

The moral of this story is: Don't kill Ninja's, because there are not to may of them left, and they are really deadly with swords and bows.

Tim

I often practice chi sao as well as sparing san sao etc. I also belive these are vital elements to any training regime. I also know that these type of practice are as different from fighting as fixed drills and stance training is from live practice.

The riots happened a while ago however there is still a lot of ill feeling in toxteth. the police is seen very little except for the odd helicopter. There were no gangs as such it was the black and asian youth who decided enogh was enogh. The most recent riot was actualy in bradford an area with a large asian population. I also went there for a time as part of a youth enituative to try to help the disenfrachised youth. I played cricket with them one day and two guys who were best of freinds started to fight and one used a cricket bat. I got in and stoped it before it got serious.

Chris

If I am ever over in the USA on a seminar or other buisness I will definatly look you up. I am always looking to do things with guys from other martial arts.

I don't believe LSD will give me the fighting edge you guys think, but I'm willing to try. I'll be at Tim's tonight, doped to the gills. I already have my Speedo on and my mouthpiece in...you all have been warned. Disregard any unusual behavior on my part as I dropped about 15 minutes ago.

ps. Tim, I know the Pan Ams are next week, but please oh please don't make me wear the pajamas tonight!

See this is the problem with us american and the whole realm of an effective system. The reason their is this whole MMA fad currently is as Tim points out the traditionalist got their assess handed to them at the UFC tournaments by grapplers. My argument is that none of them were real traditionalist and hardly anybody today is though they say they are. Why look to another style like grappling is your a kung fu stylist? The lay answer is kung fu doesnt have grappling and most fights go to the ground. The correct answer is that no matter chinese or american most teachers dont know . I mean whether chinese or japanese, african or korean, philipino or islamic these styles were developed to kill in the view or self perservation from aggressors and oppressors. The problem is we live in a McDonaldlize world meaning we want the fast food way of learning an art. This is a reason why grappling is so effective. Everytime you practice it must be with a partner, you develop an internal sense of how to react to protect yourself from bodily harm. This does not mean that other arts such as kung fu are ineffective, it means that they are not distrubuted to the massess with authenticity. The key trainings concepts that are needed are either not known or theoretical in practice. Take for example the Tiger Style of Shaolin, first things first...YOU NEED TO DEVELOP YOUR FINGERTIPS TO SWIPE LIKE A TIGER. Alot of this training is lost or remains secret. Yes there are alot of articles and videos on the subject of developing the Claw, but you never see the Proponents tearing a heavy bag open, or destroying a tree to demonstrate the claw. This is the real issue. Another example is YOU MUST MOVE AS IF A TIGER. There are many drills that develop reaction, timing, sense of distance, and strategic attack, but are either not taught because americans just want to know right away HOW DO I USE THIS? and most schools are no longer sacred and its just a buisness so they discard these things to make money by focusing on application and forms. Whats even worse is if they do not know these important criteria and try to create things that dont work or get you fucked up in the street. My ending point is there are effective chinese styles out there but they are hard to find, hence the reason why grappling is popular, or incorportated into other styles.

Tim, you're post from march mentions Taichi as a TMA/sport that has non-cooperative sparring. What form does this take? I've never heard of such Taichi. Is it similiar to Shuai Chiao?

chnkyeyes, if it is a realistic (and truly traditional) style of kung fu, it will have much "grappling" in addition to its strikes. Like you said, hard to find.

Similar. Besides throwing, we also used strikes (with controlled contact) and joint locking techniques.
