My Neon is old, rusty, creaks and groans and often needs servicing; but if I ram you with it, it will still hurt ...

May the torque be with you! ;-)

Michael,

I see you agree that martial arts should be for more than just fighting. I assume you mean for sports too! Fun fun fun. How about teaching responsibility to stand up socially and politically for what you believe and being apart from the too tired crowd to help steer the good ol US of A in a direction that will produce leaders. You know people with opinions and something to say.

What about fight preventive measures? Such as building confidence and character through Asian social ethics, which WERE an intrinsic part of the arts (since the majority were from Asia regardless whether a particular teacher emphasized them or not)?

Or is it just all about training and fun? Forget about real fighting or character development.

...If you are ready.

Atnotoos:
There are lots of reasons to do taijiquan or any martial art beyond just being a capable fighter. On the other hand, most practitioners never go much beyond focussing on whatever aspect of the training that interests them the most.

I think that the study of something like taiji or bagua or xingyi should bring competent self-defense skills as well as improve your health and, in the long run, make you a more mature human being -- not just a great martial competitior or an effecient ass-kicker or someone who does great form but falls over from the 'blow-back" when he kicks someone wearing a chest-protector.

Oh, and you also have to enjoy the training because that's important in the long-run as well. ...

Michael:

If there is no intention to learn to fight when practicing Bagua, Taiji, etc, should them be called martial arts?

Yours,

Jagdish

Just to bring this thread back to reality :-) .....
for those of you who are interested, have a look at http://sfuk.tripod.com/reviews/stevemorrisnhb.html
for a review of one of Steve Morris's videos - there's been lots of comment here about what the man himself says on his site, so check out what a knowledgeable reviewer has to say about Morris's work.
