I hear this alot. I agree that maintaining your mobility so you can escape is best, but what most people don't understand is that if you find yourself fighting with more than one determined opponent, you're still seriously compromised even if you are standing up.

Tim - Don't you consider TCC & Ba Gua among the best MAs for taking on multiple opponents?

I'm thinking of movement sequences like Fair Lady Works the Shuttle for instance, or even Single Whip for use if surrounded.

While we're at it, these arts are considered by some to be among the best to know if your opponent has a knife. What do you think?

I just have to say thanks for creating this discussion board. It is an invaluable resource for 'out of town' students, like me. Your depth of understanding and ability to communicate ideas are both exceptional. Although you are an outstanding fighter, I believe you are an even BETTER teacher. Every time you post a message, it cuts straight to the heart of the matter. Anyway, I guess that's enough sucking up, for now. Thanks again.

I think that the strategies in the IMA are very logical when it comes to dealing with more than one attacker. I don't believe it is possible, in most cases to "take on" multiple opponents, although I do believe it is possible to 'hit and run' and hopefully escape from them.

I would like to add the observation that handling multiple opponents is much like handling just one opponent in this respect: your success would depend on the skill levels of the opponents involved. Are they a mob, a team used to working together, a mixed gang of unskilled and skilled fighters, terrain, doorways, stairs, etc. One more thing that I have never seen mentioned on these hypothetical scenarios: luck!

Doorways are theoretically useful against multiple attackers. They create a "bottleneck" that might allow you to take 'em one at a time.

If you were strong enough to rip off and swing a doorway at multiple attakers, you would probably
not have to worry about people thinking about attacking you. And Luck would only be something people wished other people as you entered a room.
