What is chi??

Tim's Discussion Board: Qi Gong / Power Training : What is chi??

By jeff k on Tuesday, September 25, 2001 - 03:36 pm: Edit Post

Tim,
Perhaps I should have titled it "Chi defined?"
As I commented in the first paragraph, "The idea of Chi is fundamental to Chinese Kung Fu and Medical thinking. However, because of its new arrival, the English language has yet to formulate a word or phrase that can adequately define its meaning.

Bob #2,
Maybe just eating the placenta would be sufficient. Raw is best, or at least so I have been told is the custom in China. :P I don't think it is as simple as to say DNA or Diet is a better or more adequate definition. I think a more important part of the equation is what holds the helix together or what transforms our food into energy.

I didn't imply it was a better or more adequate definition... just that it could be considered the English equivalent.

I do like where you're going with the question of what holds the helix together. To me, that is simply the nature of things (scientists are just recently recognizing what they call 'negative space' which is, in essence, what holds the helix together, and what holds 'space' in place.)

I've eaten enough placenta in my time to verify that it does not aide in Chi production or storage.

I think I understand what Bob #2 is getting at.

If we took a human skin cell and could enlarge it to the size of a dime. We could see all distinct parts; the nucleus, the nucleolus, chromatin and all the cytoplasm, etc.

If we then enlarged it to the size of, say, Texas,
it would have a much different look- the nucleus might look like a mini sun being orbited by the huge components of cytoplasm.... with miles separating them. And there would be 'space' where there couldn't have seen 'space' before (where no 'space' exists). Yet in that space all the parts of the giant cell would keep the same distance from each other and to the observer, there would be nothing there. (likely we'd discover many 'undiscovered' parts of the cell)

Someone would feel driven to name the 'space'. Call Chi, call it anything... it's just nature...energy...this...life... stuff...

naw, probably not.

Hey Tim,
Do you believe in Chi?
Do you believe that you can emit Chi different areas of your body?
What is your definition of Chi?
Have you ever heard of Grandmaster Sin Kwang The, and what are you thoughts about him?

Thanx!

Zing,
It depends what you mean my chi.

I suggest you read the post by Fritz (11/12) under "Concepts: Chi (energy)."

I've never heard of Sin Kwang The.

Funny it seems to me that the word chi In chinese translates quite well into the english word energy for most things.

Dose energy exsist?
Can you emit energy from your body?
Can you improve the flow of energy in a punch by aligning your body correctly?
Can the flow of energy in your house feel better or worse, effecting the people in the house?
can energy knock people down?

Dosen't sound so mystical when you use it like this dose it?

Sin The is the mysterious co-founder of Shaolin-Do.

He is very rich and very mysterious. So mysterious I must mention his mystery on three different occasions.

Also, he learned kung-fu from a sideshow freak, or possibly a yeti.

I'll leave it up to the interested members of the forum to verify the 900+ forms he claims to know.

Thax Scofflaw,
How did you know this?

By Scofflaw (Unregistered Guest) on Monday, November 17, 2003 - 05:11 pm: Edit Post

Sin The' claims to have learned his kung-fu from a man affected by a rare medical disorder that causes hair to grow all over the afflicted's body. Which, coincidentally enough looks like either a yeti or a dog-man.

I'm just paraphrasing the Shaolin-Do party line(and not even trying to poke fun at them. They do it all on their own.) The forms claim and the kung-fu dogman thing are in his promotional literature.

Personally, I find it a bit hard to swallow, but then again, if conflicting histories and questionable body mechanics are your thing, then more power to ya.

Jeff K description of chi is a very good one. Different types of chi feel different some are decereable on the level of people/events/things and may feel like electic/heat/pressure etc. People who have felt chi projection describe it differently even if the projection was from the same person. This makes it hard to catalogue or put in a neat box which is why western science has mostly ignored the chi/ki/pranyama/energy phenomenon.

This is old but has to be said.

I'm neither crediting or discrediting Sin Kwang The and his martial art here but he did NOT learn from "a man affected by a rare medical disorder"; you need better reading comprehension. The man covered in hair was considered the founder. Sheesh, some of you speak of conflicting histories and then create them yourself. Let's leave history to the historians, eh.

Alas, who cares. He's been a master, and has trained other masters, of his style for at least 40 years which is longer than most of us have been involved in martial arts, period. In comparison, Bruce Lee would barely have founded Jeet Kune Do/Jun Fan for that long.

BTW, I know he, and his brother, trained other masters for that long because I know a couple of them personally.

the concept of chi is a very broad one, especially to one who knows little of it. but i say that once you have completed your investigation and have asked your questions to the right people and have found your answers, that you should train hard until you reach a breakthrough. There are specific nei dan training methods that when worked with consistently, will prove to have amazing results such as standing meditation, circle walking, and of course application of the principles that you have learned while sparring a proficient opponent.
no person can teach you, only guide you to your own revelation.

and read this again, a quote by tim,

One of the hallmarks of the IMA practice involves inhibiting non-productive learned responses and superfluous movement (bad habits of using the body)so that truly natural movement patterns and true balance once again emerge. In the human body, nothing is more efficient than natural power, which is created by using the body according to its design.

The so-called "Daoist" influence in the IMA is not so much concerned with the practice and cultivation of mysterious powers and energies as it is with a return to the ability to access our inborn potential for natural and spontaneous movement and power. Apparently 'simple' practices like slowly walking a circle while holding static upper body positions (or static stance keeping) serve to reduce physical and mental variables to a minimum (while providing a focus of attention), so that the practitioner can focus on the feeling of the alignment, momentum and the body's reactions to them. The increase in the depth of mind/body unity serves to inhibit counterproductive learned and subconscious body use and to facilitate the return to natural, whole body power.
