I often wondered why there is no joint locking... You are allowed to pummel a guys face and beat him in the head which holds Ze Brains... but thats cool as long as you dont twist a wrist.

Strange.

I don't know anything about the reasons for rules in UFC; but from what I have seen of real fights, I would suspect that it's because it's almost impossible to get a lock on someone who is still full of juice and has some skill as a fighter...

... on the other hand, once you've gotten the upper hand, it's a little too easy in a sport competition to get someone to submit by threatening to break a joint. It's also too easy to apply more force in such locks/controls than you meant to when you're caught up in the excitement of the competition.

an Arm Bar is a joint lock and many UFC fights end with an Arm Bar.

All joint locks are legal in the UFC, both standing and on the ground with the exception of breaking fingers and toes. More than half the matches are ended with jointlocks or choking/strangling techniques.

"Submissions" are joint locks and chokes.

True... but it would be interesting to see joint locks etc.

There may be a whole group of fighters out there(not competing) that would and bring new life to the sport.

I would love to see what a bad ass Chin Na dude could do.

Tim, besides the guillotine give me an example of a fighter winning with ana ctual standup jointlock. Ive never even seen anyone in the ufc apply a standing kimura probably because it would be too easy to slip out of and the guy could still hit you with his free arm/hand.

Sakuraba broke Renzo Gracie's arm with standing Kimura in Pride 10.

By Tim on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 12:22 pm: Edit Post

There have also been a couple of standing naked strangles from the rear.

By Bob #2 on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 02:23 pm: Edit Post

sleepydragon and enforcer have been watching the edited for children versions of Pride and UFC if they haven't seen any fights end with joint locks.
The Pride 10 fight where Renzo Gracie wont tap out but his elbow is bent backwards is the greatest fight ever.

what I want to know is why fighting styles use such queer names:
standing naked strangles
'slip' a punch
upper cunt
butterfly kick
loin kill
golden cock on one leg.

WHY?!!? It's embarrassing!

[it may be hard for me to reply as I have to sneak into my neighbor's house to use his computer. he's narcaleptic so I just have to scare him whenever he wakes up- he screems and falls asleep. he makes me wish I had a video camera]

Bob#2,
Why do you always go out of the way to be a wiseguy?

Of course I have seen fights that end with arm locks and tap out etc.

I am talking about moves like sankyo, ikkyo, nikyo etc. from aikido, aikijujutsu... stuff like that.

By Tim on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 06:01 pm: Edit Post

Sleepydrageon,
The reason you have never seen standing wristlock submissions (the ones you listed above) is that they are next to impossible to set up and apply on any trained fighter. It's usally a question of mobility. It is much easier to apply a submission on the ground when you have severly limited the opponent's mobility, and therefore his options for escape or counter.

Tim,

That's what I figured and how I feel... I didnt want to be the one to say it and start a free for all with Bob#2... he is a pretty intimidating figure here.

Is there alot of full contact/local fights in CA?

It is really picking up in the Ft.Lauderdale Florida area.

sleepydragon,

One of Tim's blue belts tapped me out w/nikyo last week. While he was mounted on top of me.

"Is there alot of full contact/local fights in CA?"

Yea, walk into any bar on Main Street in Huntington Beach or San Pedro on a Saturday night :-)

Sleepydragon,

I may go out of my way to 'borrow' a computer now and then but I'm no wiseguy. I'm not affiliated with the mob at all. I met Tony Suprano at a grocery store once. He's a really nice guy.

By the way...why do you and Enforcer refuse to register IDs on the site? Its free, only takes a minute and will stop others from posting embarrasing posts using your name.

Bob, Bob, Bob... Bob#2. I don't know why it bothers you so that I have never registered.

I always thought to register you had to be a student of Tims, but now I know... I will register. Do I get a free Dr. Pepper with my registration?
